Personal

• Sam is from Southern California and grew up in Laguna Beach, Orange County.
• Sam was engaged to Lisa Sherbourne when he joined the Bartlet For America campaign, this was possibly the reason they broke up.
• Sam's father had been having an affair for 28 years (in 2001) with a woman he kept in a condo in Santa Monica.
• In 1999 Sam accidentally slept with a call girl, Laurie, who he then tried to reform.
• Sam briefly dated Leo's daughter, Mallory, until his picture with Laurie appeared in the Daily Mirror. After this, he avoided Mallory, even at the hospital after Rosslyn, and didn't call her.
• Sam enjoys sailing, although navigation isn't his strong point and he has a tendency to fall overboard.

Professional & Education

• Sam Graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and then attended Duke where he was editor of the law review.
• He graduated law school in 1991.
• After law school, he joined Dewey Ballantine and then moved to Gage Whitney Pace where he was a month short of being made a partner when he resigned to join Josh on the first Bartlet campaign.
• Sam left the White House in 2002 to run for Congress in Orange County, California. He lost the election, but didn't return to the White House despite supposedly being promoted to senior counsel to the president.
• His Secret Service codename was Princeton.

Misc

• In the private sector, Sam billed at $500 an hour.
• Sam once made a pass at Leo's wife, Jenny, without realizing who she was.
• He knows nothing about the history of the White House.
• He can recite the names of the members of Congress in alphabetical order.
• Sam was recording secretary of the Gilbert And Sullivan Society at Princeton.
